Do you ever feel like you're surrounded by fake facades of people? Like all the people who claim to care about you don't actually care? Do you ever feel like all your friends are too busy to take notice of anything that's going on in your own life or what's important to you? Do you ever start to wonder if maybe it's not worth it, maybe it would be better to just go your own way instead of pretending, being in a fake friendship, fake relationship? I do. I feel like the friends I have are hollow souls, too involved in their own lives to care about anybody but themselves. This is the American culture. Great, isn't it? Everyone's too busy to really get involved with anyone else. Even if you live together, you all have so much else to do that if you talk for more than fifteen minutes a day, it's a rare occasion. I don't feel like I should have to make a fuss to get people to care about what happened to me over my weekend. I don't feel that I should have to interrupt to get people to listen to me. And yet that's what is happening. In my current circle of friends, everyone interrupts everyone else and no one really listens to anyone else, everyone's too busy trying to put in their own two cents to actually stop and listen. Which is frustrating to me because I was raised to never interrupt if I could possibly help it. So I end up not saying hardly anything, and when I do speak I feel like if I stop even to take a breath someone's going to interrupt me and I'll not be able to finish what I wanted to say, because no one is listening - which happens all too often, I am sorry to say. I wish I could say that my friends are all warm and caring and supportive . . . but they're not. And I find myself wondering more and more if it's worth it to invest that time and energy into relationships which are so shallow they're worth almost nothing. I remember friendships back when I was in school that were so deep we had no secrets from each other at all. Now it's amazing if my friends even know what kind of mood I'm in. I wonder if all adult friendships are this way? Or if this is just the way college kids are? Or maybe it's just the group of people I happened to fall into that are like this? I don't know. But what I do know is, I don't like it.
